High School Esports League Competition and Platform Updates

We have continued to make changes to the competition platform and league rules in pursuit of the best student experience possible. All rulesets were edited to be clearer and more concise, and participants should re-read the rulesets prior to participating. Here are some notable changes from last school year:

  • General Competition Rules: The regular season has been increased to seven matches instead of last year’s six.

  • Splatoon 3: Adjusted the map selection procedure and increased the series length to best-of-9 to give students more playing time on more modes. (HSEL only)

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3 vs 3 Crew Battles: This is a new competition and ruleset, but all interested coaches are encouraged to review the “Best Practices” section of the rules, as each match may play differently depending on the amount of systems each school has available.

  • VALORANT: The map pool has been updated to reflect what is currently available for ranked matchmaking.

  • Leaderboards: We've refreshed the leaderboard UI to better display how ties are broken. Additionally, over last winter, we rebuilt the leaderboard tiebreaker commonly referred to as “head-to-head” to compare all participants with a tied win-loss record. Learn more here.

Playoff Schedule? Number of Brackets?

When possible, we will offer multiple playoff brackets per competition and division to provide as many opportunities for student success as possible. The size of each playoff bracket varies depending on the game being played and the number of active participants. The highest-seeded participants will always compete in the "Champ Bracket", while other brackets may be named Gold, Silver, etc.

The round-by-round playoff schedule, along with the numbers of brackets and their participants will be announced during the fourth week of the regular season.
